Landscaping: The Yard You’ve Always Wanted

Have you recently purchased a new home and are eager to put your touch on the lawn? Perhaps, you are finally able to create the landscape you have been dreaming about. Whatever the circumstance, now is the time to focus on the landscaping you have always wanted.

As you begin your yard transformation project, there are many factors to consider. But don’t let them hold you back. Do some research and get ready to have fun!

Tips for Crafting Your Landscape

LandscapingWhat is your inspiration?  Before starting, check out local garden stores, arboretums, estate gardens, and nurseries. Take pictures and make notes of the things that appeal to you. Then do a bit of research to see what elements will work for your space. Next, create a blueprint of your yard. Be sure to notate where your house and any outbuildings are, so you can map out your vision.

Think ahead.

As you craft your future landscape think about what you envision your yard looking like in a few years. Think about shade patterns and how they might be affected as a bush or tree grows. You may also want to leave spaces for the yet-to-be-determined flowers or shrubbery, so you can add them later on. Also, think about the care maintenance aspect of any building or decorative elements. If you plant that vine, will you be able to paint the trellis or fence behind it later on?

Get the right tools for the job.

Landscaping, done right, adds value to your home. To achieve a beautiful lawn, you need to have the best quality tools you can afford for the job. From lawnmowers and weed trimmers to snow shovels and shears, have tools you are comfortable with. Then be sure to keep these tools properly maintained. Use quality lubricants and oil and replace mower filters, to ensure these items last a long time. You can get these maintenance products- filters, oil, lube, etc. – from your local AMSOIL dealer, The House of Syn.

Don’t forget the lights!

Lighting is quite the statement in gardens, so be sure to have a mix of lighting styles. Be it twinkle lights in the shrubbery, spotlights on statuary, or reflective surfaces that add light and safety, choose your lights for both fun and function.

Take a walk.

Do you plan on having a large garden area? Then consider stone or mulch-lined paths, gentle curves, shaded areas, and other inviting aspects.

Mix it up.

Landscaping doesn’t have to be all about flowers, trees, and shrubbery. Mixing vegetables and herbs with flowers is a great way to utilize space. Many flowers and veggies do amazingly in the same spot. Planting petunias next to squashes and gourds will keep away harmful squash bugs. Marigolds are natural bug repellants. Planting nasturtiums next to cucumbers keeps away pests. To keep aphids away from lettuce plant strong-smelling herbs such as garlic or chives.

If you have never tried your hand at landscaping, the task might seem a bit daunting. But there are many resources available to help you get started and throughout your journey. From the best tools to use to the greenery that excels in Wisconsin’s climate, there is always something new to try. But at the end of the day, you will know you created a space that is all about you and your family’s needs.
